Moving Pains

Leaving for Cali!!

So the biggest bummer of this whole moving deal is that the bike that I really wanted to ride in Fruita and Moab is not done as of yet. The bike is nothing to bling, it's and IRO Mia frame, the parts are a little overboard. Fork will be a Maverick DUC32 The Front Hub will be a Chris King 24mm Disc Hub laced to a Salsa disc only 29er rim, The Headset is a Chris King Blue, rear hub is a Paul WORD the freewheel is a White Indy freewheel, and the rear wheel is tubeless on a mavic 819 rim. The brakes are Avid Juciy 5's so nothing super bling here, but they work great and the bike was a good friends taht sold it to me way to cheap, so I would feel far to guilty to ever sell it again, so I am throwing some parts at it. it's a Single speed set up, and it's got new shoes and a new 32 tooth chainring waiting for it at the apartment. I am having a great guy set the fork up, infact I am trading parts and tool and such for the new fork, and really can't bitch that it's not done. He is doing me a favor, and the timeline was short even if I was a paying customer! Still I am very bummed that it's not going with me. He will ship it to me along with the Bontrager he is build a for for, and the BMC SS Cross bike I droped off yesterday so I didn't have to drag it with me on the road trip... my car will look very sad with only 2 bikes on it, I had imagined it having a rocket box, 4 bike on top, and a bike or two on the hitch mount, it would have looked legen-wait for it- Dary! but I guess there will be less chance of me ripping them off at a drive through!

Lance Armstrong

in the news lately..... Lance Armstrong might not be allowed to ride in the tour de Fance because he left the sight of a French tester for 30 minutes after being told by the tester that he could. I am a US citz, and Mary is a French citz. As a Frenchy Mary feels the need to defend all things French (her mother included) and I like to opose her on this for the sake of argument. however I feel that the stupid French testers don't have an ethical leg to stand on for this one... here is our emails back and fro.

Yea, but it's not mentioned that Armstrong asked the tester if he could shower, and the tester said he could no problem. The other piece is that no matter how much water he drank, or if he was able to use clean urine, the blood tests taken would have shown the results.... Armstrong should not be banned from the tour and the french should just test him again! the should only be enforced to the max penalty if the tester had given Armstrong a no answer to the "can I shower first" question... that is my stance. if they ban him there should be a notation to the winners name that Lance Armstrong was banned from the tour that year, and that the guy who won did not compete with the best in the world. I'd like to see the stats on French riders tested vs each other country. My bet is the average is far lower, and that the international group should be in charge of the testing not a single country that can create serious judgment calls. These testers, and the group have historically and recently shown their lack of tack and professionalism, which in my humble opinion is a symptom of a very poorly run group.

The plan so far is to leave for Colorado Friday between noon and 2pm. it's 918 miles, through Nebraska, which sucks because it's Nebraska! but got to get through that state to get to the village coffee shop in Boulder CO. Iowa

So first off, I want to say sorry for the lack of pictures, for a lot of you that actually look at this blog reading is not your strong suit, Roger, Alex, Tommy LOL. but I figured an update was a good idea as a few things have happened.

The Iowa trip was awesome, but about 3 miles into the ride I found a log ride (Skinny) and didn't notice that half way it narrowed and that a tree was in the way of my entirely too wide bars. I made it past the tree, and the narrow part, but right at the end my wheel slipped off the log and I had a yard sale. The Bike was fine but some massive black marks are on the rear triangle and I am not sure if it's the base coat showing or if the frame picked it off the log, either wany no biggie AL doesn't rust and for God sakes it's a Mnt. bike, scratches show I actually ride... now for me the helmet now has a bit more of a crack and my hip hit so hard I almost peed a little. it's tweaked but I can walk but the rest of the ride was awful and I bowed out at lunch when 4 beers and advil didn't make it feel any better.

I am in need of some time on the single speed cross bike to get back in shape. the IA trails were all climbing and not much down hill. nothing super tecnical but a few spots I walked because it was the first ride of the year, I am out of shape, and I already wrecked in the early stages of the day. I am very out of shape, and I fear that I will be regearing all the single speeds for this season as I am moving to Cali on the 25th. I need to get my legs and lungs back, and that means more time on pavement just to get back in the groove of things. I have about 2 weeks to get in good shape as I am driving from MN to CA and will be ridding the following

1) Boulder Colorado
I have a buddy that tells me there are great new additions to the old tracks we use to run
2) Fruita Colorado
Mary and I are going to try and catch a soda and a ride with BRose of Shockspital this dude might be the coolest suspension and brake mech ever. he has a shop in Minneapolis and will be missed, mostly because he puts up with me and fixes my bikes when I can't.
3) Moab Utah
Mary has never been, and I haven't been back since I was in HS, so we gotta hit Moab since we are driving by, I was thinking so slick rock, and shorter loops as this is jsut a stop.
4) St. George Utah
An old mentor of mine was just here and says this might be the best single track he has ever ridden, all new and very few ridders. I asked around in Minneapolis, and no one has ever ridden here, Sounds like we won't have to deal with crowds
5) Boulder Canyon outside Las Vegas Nevada
Never been, and have seen all the pics from demo rides at InterBike. Looks fun, and again it's only 1 hour off the drive to Cali, so we are in!
6) Santa Barbara CA
Mary lived here for a little while in 2008 and wants to get some ridding in up there as well as visiting her friend Marco, great guy.
Then to LA where I will start working the following Monday. I can't wait, it's a REAL JOB working for the Man, but you know what? He pays well. I am hoping that as soon as I get into working for this group I will have the ability to find a PT job working with bikes somewhere.

anyway I will update more as I know more, until then look at my the post below and be jealous! the BMC take 2 is up and will be running today. hopefully I don't crash this one into another garage,
